Tell me about your history in the area in the Camberwell/Malvern area?
JM: I grew up in nearby hawthorn east so the area will always feel like home and has a sense of nostalgia. I have a great connection to the area and feel I have a good understanding of the local consumer and demographic.
What drew you to running your business in this area?
JM: Having an intimate understanding of the local area really helped us roll out our stores. We have a lot of friends that live in the local area so having a strong network helps any business, particularly hospitality. We made a decision to target the area and have since opened 3 stores in Camberwell, 2 in Malvern and 1 in glen iris over the last 7 years.
How did your passion for hospitality arise?
JM: My passion for coffee and hospitality started when working as an 18 year old at my dads restaurant. Soon after I moved to Canberra to play football and worked part time in a cafe called “Black Pepper”. It was there that my coffee skills developed and I fell in love with the hospitality industry.
What do you like most about the community?
JM: It’s a very loyal and loving community. We’ve got so many customers that have been loyal to us since day 1 and follow us around all our venues.
What is your favourite part about running your own business?
JM: Having a really young and enthusiastic team really helps keep me motivated. Opening new venues and being apart of the design and contraction phase is also something that really excites me.
Do you still enjoy making coffees or do you prefer to be behind the scenes?
JM: I absolutely love making coffee still, however I don’t get a chance to do it very often anymore. My role has naturally developed into a more behind the scenes role however I still regularly communicate with our venue staff on a daily basis.
Current favourite dish on your menu?
JM: Everything!
How was your experience in purchasing a home from JA CAIN?
JM: Purchasing our house from the Cain’s was great. They made us feel special and made the process very easy. Because they were so great to deal with, shortly after our purchase, My wife’s parents also successfully sold their family home with JA CAIN.
